Added by Sunè Samuels@ Facebook LiveShort and brutally steep, on exhausted legs, Stage 5 will be a major physical and psychological hurdle on the Trail To Val de Vie.
In the past stages like these have been dubbed play days, but there is little playful about this intense test. The climbing starts virtually instantaneously. Leaving Wellington, the only way is uphill on the lengthy Hawequa Climb. It is never steep, but rather a slow, leg-sapping grind.
The descent from the summit starts on dusty dual track, before slipping into the Brooklyn Bridge singletrack. Singletrack climbs and descents blur into one vision of agony and ecstasy thereafter. Up Seven Peaks, down Cool Runnings, up Aap d’Huez into Full Monty – the day’s Land Rover Technical Terrain – and a further black diamond, black route loop.
The fun, games, climbing and, in all likelihood, suffering are not quite over yet. Riders must battle home for very hard-earned rest and recovery ahead of a big weekend of riding.

The popular Garden of Poets festival, established over the years as the home of the African poetry in South Africa (and the world! ) taking place at the Breytenbach Center in Wellington on October 22 and 23 October the 10th consecutive year. This is made possible in partnership with NB Uitgewers again thanks to a generous contribution from the Dawn Trust.
As in 2020, the format and presentation of the items will depend on Covid-19 regulations and all the necessary requirements will be strictly fulfilled.
The final program and details about the format will be announced in the last week of September. Lovers of poetry, however, can look forward to various introductions of new bundles, presentations, book exhibitions, conversations and a particular presentation about translations by PEN Afrikaans, singing of toonesette poems, a beautiful artalling and togetherness with poets like nowhere elsewhere.
Alfred Schaffer, the Dutch poet who has been living in South Africa for years and whose poems have also been translated into Afrikaans, is the poet who is being held this year.
A special program and presentations also presented in honour of poet PJ Philander, who would celebrate his 100th birthday in November. Moreover, the Ingrid Jonker prize for an Afrikaans debut bundle is also awarded again at Garden of Poets – to Ryan Pedro for his bundle of Pink ceramic puppies.
Turksvy Publications also introduces the floral reading pandemic poems Masks and walls (with 142 known and unknown poets). In addition to a conversation with among other things one of the compilers, Daniel Hugo, some of the poet s’ poems were shown by Frazer Barry who will sing it.
Our Klyntji, the alternative, multilingual zine publishing poems, short stories, photography and comics, will also be re-introduced here.
