Dress up in all shades of pink for family-fun in the Winelands

It's time to get your PINK on! This happy colour is the theme for Delheim’s 2019 Harvest Festival hosted by this renowned Stellenbosch wine stalwart on Saturday, 26 January to celebrate the bounty of the vineyard.

At the beginning of every year, the Cape Winelands become a hive of activity as harvest gets underway and Delheim is traditionally one of the very first Stellenbosch wine estates to ring in the new vintage in high spirits. This year’s pink-theme celebrates the harvest of Delheim’s world-renowned Pinotage Rosé – a wine that has built a loyal following since its launch in 1976 as the first in South Africa.

Tickets for the 2019 Delheim Harvest Festival is limited to only 120 adults and 30 children who make timeous reservations and the event again promises a fun-filled day in the country, at a winery known for its generous hospitality. Weather permitting, the hub of activities will happen at Delheim’s tranquil picnic area along the shady banks of the Klip River that flows through the farm.

The day starts fresh amidst the vineyards with grape picking and exhilarating stomping action and then eases into a laidback, family-friendly harvest feast brimming with delights. Think farm-fresh salads, dolmades, baked bread, cheese & preserves, pickles, a variety of meats and fruit. Cheese straws, olives, grapes and bread on tables will provide nibbles throughout.

Dessert will be a highlight, with fynbos cupcakes and Pinotage ice-cream.

Wines will be on offer through Delheim's complimentary wine bar, of course, and there will be juice for the kiddies.

There will also be vineyard tours and tractor rides, while live music entertainment will set just the right mood for a memorable day out with family and friends. Rewards await the best-dressed enthusiast; the fastest grape pickers in the eponymous vineyard competition; and, the most juice stomped.

Cost: R650 per person and R150 for children (5-17 years old)

Tickets include mos and a mosbolletjie welcome treat on arrival; all the wine, juice, the harvest spread which caters for young and old, dessert, fun activities and live music entertainment. Pre-bookings are essential.

Savour sensory ecstasy with Idiom's Wine & Macaron Experience

Exquisite new summer pairing delights from November 2018 till end of February 2018

This summer at Idiom you can explore interesting and unusual wines through the prism of macarons, the dainty confection that shares an Italian heritage with the celebrated Helderberg winery which overlooks False Bay.

It is not widely known that macarons have been produced in Venetian monasteries since the 8th century AD. Only during the Renaissance period, when Catherine de Medici of Florence married Henry ii and became Queen of France, did they become more famous when her personal team of Italian pastry chefs made them for her at the French Royal Court.

Likewise, the Bottega Family, owners of Idiom, have a proud Italian heritage. This identity is showcased at their popular Italian Festival held annually at Idiom during the first weekend of March. In addition to producing a number of Idiom wines from Italian grape varieties grown on their property, the family also import and distribute an extensive collection of wines from Italy, which is now on display and for sale downstairs at Idiom in the Vinotria wine library.

The macarons are made by the pastry team at Idiom, with ingredients that showcase the character of the wines being paired. The pairing goes from light and airy to dark and intense.

The first wine in the pairing line-up is an imported Prosecco called Romeo and Juliet, a bubbly sensation from the Veneto region that has been paired with a chamomile macaron. The treat, garnished with white estate flowers, presents ingredients of chamomile jelly, peach buttercream, white chocolate and bee pollen dust.

It is followed by Idiom’s Imperium White Gold, an elegant late harvest viognier served with a lemon macaron. It incorporates caramel cream, honey jelly, lemon curd and candied lemon. The macaron itself is brushed with gold dust and served on crushed almond shortbread alongside yellow flower petals.

The Idiom Imperium Black Gold Hailstorm is the dramatic conclusion. This ‘freak of nature’ raisin wine made from Merlot grapes pairs with a beautiful flower-decorated blueberry macaron of dark chocolate ganache, violet jelly, blueberry gel and dried blueberry raisins.

The exquisite Idiom Wine & Macaron Experience affords visitors the opportunity to not only sample the wares of true vinous and culinary craft, but also to enjoy spectacular bay views. From its elevated vineyard setting, there are 180-degree panoramic views of both sea and mountain. The vantage point offers a unique coastal perspective of the full profile of the Cape Peninsula across False Bay whilst having the green, windswept vineyards and rugged, fynbos-covered mountainside as a backdrop to this unique Cape Winelands’ destination.

The winery restaurant is ideal for visitors who wish to extend their taste exploration to the full Idiom experience.

The Idiom Wine & Macaron Experience is on offer from November until the end of February (Fridays till Sundays) at a price of R150 per person. Pre-bookings are essential and tour group bookings are available on request.

There are a number of wine farms who take conservation really seriously, some of whom are World Wildlife (WWF) Conservation Champions.

Backsberg was the first wine farm to be carbon neutral in South Africa (back in 2006 already) and is also proud to be a WWF Conservation Champion, alongside Cederberg, Gabrielskloof, Lourensford, Cloof, Wildekrans and Vondeling, all of whom hosted a tasting and foraged breakfast up in the Backsberg vineyards on Monday 10th Sept.

With more than 200 wine and grape producers within its boundaries, and a historic town brimming with wine bars, restaurants and coffee shops in oak-lined streets, Stellenbosch requires a few days, at the very least, just to skim the surface of all it has to offer visitors.
